The concept of identity is a complicated one, and can be quite difficult to figure out for young people. The "fake" identity called the false persona is a challenging memoir for this reason... In "The False Persona," Norah Mcclintock presents an intriguing account of her time in California where she participated in a theater production that challenged all notions of what it means to be an actor and student, while battling outside forces who opposed these concepts. Weaving together fiction with memoir, Mcclintock illustrates not only how her life experiences have been shaped by events outside her understanding but also how these experiences have led her to develop insights into the world around her. Her explorations into identity and the process of coming to terms with one's past and present selves provide the backdrop to the production at the center of this memoir. "The False Persona" begins with Mcclintock's discovery that her mother is not sick but rather a drug dealer and has been so all along. Her journey through life and her struggles with identity lead Mcclintock to a point where she begins to question everything she once thought about herself, the world, and her family. With each turn of events Mcclintock seems not only to discover new aspects of herself but also uncovering new questions surrounding truth, self-identity, morality, and compassion. In her memoir, Mcclintock recalls a life full of uncertainty and questions. An example is when she was young and was asked, "Don't you think you should find a boyfriend?" She responded, "I don't think I should find a boyfriend. I really don't know. There's just so many boys." This quote illustrates that Mcclintock was hard to understand as a teenager because she actually did not have answers but instead was searching for the answers as she continued to grow as a human being. The search for answers can be seen throughout the memoir as she questions everything from why people lie about themselves to what it means to be an actor. "The False Persona" is a memoir that highlights how truth is not always set in stone and how identity, no matter how it develops, is never complete. Norah Mcclintock's memoir "The False Persona" shows the reader the countless struggles of growing up with an identity crisis. Growing up in 1970s Canada, Norah Mcclintock was exposed to people who were drug addicts and criminals which made her a target for these types of people as well as issues concerning herself as a child. She was also exposed to negative aspects of her family through her older sister who was involved with drug dealers and criminals. This exposed her to influences which made her begin to question who she was and what she wanted out of life. The search for an identity led her to become creative and think outside the box by becoming creative in theatre. Acting allowed her to be exposed to continuing situations during production, which exposed her to the truth of what she wanted out of life, as well as what it meant to be who she was searching for. The False Persona tells the story of Norah McClintock's childhood growing up in Canada with abusive parents who were alcoholics. Her childhood was full of chaos, but it taught her that there is no rulebook on how one should live their life. cfa1e77820
